The Perse School Singapore Year 2 Farmers Market

Year 2 Farmers’ Market: Young Entrepreneurs Making a Difference

Our Year 2 students proudly hosted their much-anticipated Farmers’ Market, bringing to life months of learning, creativity, and collaboration.

The Farmers’ Market marked the culmination of a term-long inquiry project exploring farming, food production, sustainability, entrepreneurship, and community action. Delivered through Little Lab, a project-based learning approach currently being trialled in The Perse School (Singapore)’s Early Years School, the project encouraged students to investigate real-world challenges, connect learning across subjects, and develop skills beyond the classroom.

Throughout the term, students explored where food comes from, how crops are grown, and the journey from seed to market. They planted and propagated their own plants, discovered local farming practices, visited HortPark for an edible plants discovery tour, analysed product pricing, designed marketing materials, and developed products to sell at the market.

The event itself was entirely student-led. Students from each class worked in teams to prepare a range of products, including food, drinks, handmade crafts, and games. They also researched charitable causes, selected organisations to support through their fundraising efforts, designed stall decorations, created promotional materials, managed sales, and welcomed customers with confidence and enthusiasm.

On the day, our young entrepreneurs demonstrated remarkable creativity, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. They applied their mathematical understanding by calculating costs, setting prices, and even introducing promotions in response to customer demand. The excitement quickly spread throughout the school as students from across the Early Years community, as well as staff and families, visited and supported the market.

Thanks to their hard work and dedication, the Year 2 cohort raised funds for charities chosen by each class, including World Wildlife Fund (WWF)’s Adopt a Turtle programme, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Action for Singapore Dogs Society (ASD), Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, and Save Our Street Dogs (SOSD).

More than a fundraising event, the Farmers’ Market provided meaningful opportunities for students to apply their learning in a real-world context while developing valuable skills in collaboration, financial literacy, creativity, communication, and social responsibility.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 2 students for their initiative, perseverance, and commitment to making a positive difference in the world around them. Go, young entrepreneurs!
