Celebrating Japanese Culture and Community at The Perse School (Singapore)’s Kodomo Matsuri

This week, The Perse School (Singapore) came alive with colour, music, and cultural celebration as students, teachers, and families gathered for our annual Kodomo Matsuri (Japanese Children’s Day) celebration. The event was a joyful showcase of Japanese culture and the incredible teamwork and creativity of our school community.

Parents were warmly welcomed to campus to enjoy an exciting line-up of student performances that highlighted both artistic talent and cultural appreciation. The programme opened with an energetic Japanese drumming performance by the JAS Japanese Drum Team, setting the tone for an afternoon filled with enthusiasm and celebration.

Students across different year groups then took to the stage with a variety of performances inspired by Japanese traditions and popular culture. Nursery and Reception students delighted the audience with their lively Ebikanics dance, while Year 2 students presented a meaningful play explaining the significance of Japanese Children’s Day. Year 1 students charmed the crowd with their energetic AIUEO Ninja Dance, introducing the Japanese alphabet through movement and music.

The celebrations continued with dance performances inspired by Japanese anime and contemporary music, including Silhouette from Naruto and Suzume by Radwimps. The programme concluded with an impressive Japanese large brush calligraphy performance by the Year 5 and 6 students. They combined art, precision, and teamwork in a truly memorable finale.

Beyond the performances, families also enjoyed a variety of delicious Japanese delicacies available on campus, including takoyaki, inari sushi, and mini bento sets. The scrumptious food added to the festive atmosphere and giving everyone a taste of Japan’s rich culinary culture.

Kodomo Matsuri was more than just a celebration — it was a meaningful opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of Japanese traditions while developing confidence, collaboration, and communication skills. The event reflected the tremendous effort and dedication of our students and teachers, whose teamwork and creativity made the day such a success.

At The Perse School (Singapore), we are proud to create opportunities for cultural learning that bring our community together and inspire global appreciation from an early age.
